Lalbagh Drug Den Exposed

A suspected hidden liquor and drug operation was uncovered in Lalbagh, Dhaka, after police conducted a raid on a residential building following information provided by local residents, leading to the arrest of a female tenant and the discovery of illicit alcohol and related materials.

On Thursday, officers from Lalbagh Police Station carried out an operation at a five-storey building located in Nawabganj Lane under Ward No. 23. Acting on community tip-offs, law enforcement searched the ground-floor residence of a female tenant and reportedly recovered approximately 3 to 3.5 litres of locally produced alcoholic spirits, commonly known as “country liquor”.

According to local sources, residents became suspicious after observing unusual activity in the flat. They alerted the police, who then entered the premises with community support. Inside the residence, officers allegedly found multiple containers, including two large drums and several smaller vessels, some of which contained liquor stored in plastic bags.

Eyewitnesses claimed that during the raid, the accused woman attempted to dispose of evidence by pouring alcohol away and using bathroom facilities in an apparent effort to dilute or destroy the substance. Despite this, police managed to recover a significant portion of the suspected contraband.

Local residents further alleged that the premises had long been associated with drug-related activity, including the consumption and distribution of various narcotics. They also claimed that young people frequently visited the location, suggesting it had effectively functioned as an informal hub for illicit gatherings.

However, conflicting accounts emerged regarding responsibility. The arrested woman denied involvement in drug trafficking, stating that she works in a legal profession and had been living in the property with her husband for several months. She alleged that she was being pressured by the landlord’s son, Sajjad, who she claimed was directly involved in drug consumption and coercion linked to illegal transactions.

Sajjad, the landlord’s son, admitted to occasional drug use and acknowledged that a room in the building had been used as a recreational space where friends gathered. He, however, denied any ongoing involvement in drug trading.

The husband of the arrested woman stated over the phone that while there may be involvement of Sajjad in drug-related activities, he was unaware of any specific dealings.

Police confirmed the recovery of around 3 litres of alcohol and the detention of one woman. Further legal proceedings are currently underway.
