In Paris, members of the Bangladeshi diaspora gathered to observe Bangladesh’s Independence and National Day through a discussion meeting that highlighted the enduring spirit of the Liberation War and the community’s role in national development.
The event was organised by the social organisation “Bangladeshi Citizens Council, France” and took place on Sunday evening (29 March) at a restaurant in the Gare du Nord area of the French capital, a neighbourhood well known for its significant Bangladeshi presence. The gathering brought together community leaders, professionals, and expatriates from diverse backgrounds.
The programme was conducted by the organisation’s General Secretary, Muhammad Ibrahim Bhuiyan, while the session was chaired by its President, Abul Khayer Laskar. The proceedings began with the recitation of verses from the Holy Qur’an, setting a solemn and respectful tone. This was followed by a special prayer seeking eternal peace for the martyrs of Bangladesh’s 1971 Liberation War.
Speakers throughout the discussion reflected on the historical significance of the Liberation War, describing it as the foundation of the Bangladeshi nation’s identity and sovereignty. They emphasised that the long and arduous struggle for independence was rooted in the aspiration to build a just, democratic, and equitable society. The importance of preserving and accurately transmitting the history of the Liberation War to younger generations was repeatedly underlined, particularly within diaspora communities where cultural continuity can face challenges.
Participants also stressed that independence is not merely a territorial achievement but a multidimensional concept encompassing economic freedom, social justice, and freedom of expression. They called for greater unity among Bangladeshis abroad to contribute more effectively to national development and to uphold democratic values.
A special guest at the event, Monowar Patwary, Joint Convener of the NCP France Diaspora wing, addressed the gathering, appreciating the initiative and highlighting the importance of diaspora engagement in strengthening Bangladesh’s international presence. Other attendees included executive member Tanvir Wadud, Vice-President Shahidul Islam, and businessman Zakir Hossain, along with several members of the expatriate community.
