Twelve Die in Mediterranean Human Trafficking Tragedy

Families in Sunamganj, Bangladesh, are reeling after twelve residents lost their lives attempting to reach Europe via the Mediterranean, lured by traffickers’ promises of a better life. Some were coerced, while others were persuaded by the prospect of financial gain, only to meet a tragic end at sea.

One of the victims, 20-year-old Fahim Ahmad from Kabirnagar village in Boglabazar Union, Dowarabazar Upazila, was being sent to Greece through Libya by a relative. Fahim perished when the boat sank. Local residents revealed that his paternal uncle, Jamal Uddin, had facilitated the journey via Libya, while another brother, Abdur Rahim, also known as Jasim Uddin, remains in Libya. Both men are currently facing human trafficking charges in the Sunamganj Anti-Human Trafficking Tribunal.

According to villagers, Fahim was among several individuals from the area sent by the same network. One family reportedly paid 1.4 million taka to the traffickers. Attempts to reach Jamal Uddin for comment were unsuccessful. Fahim’s uncle, Taijul Islam, told the press, “We did not support sending Fahim abroad illegally,” but declined to elaborate further.

Local officials warn that the lure of a prosperous life has made many vulnerable to traffickers. Mohammad Milon Khan, chairman of Boglabazar Union Parishad, stated, “Many are deceived by promises of a better future, which drives them into the hands of human traffickers and unsafe journeys.”

Sunamganj District Commissioner Mohammad Ilias Mia told the press that the Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs) of Jagannathpur and Dirai have compiled lists of known traffickers and handed them to the police. “We are monitoring all affected upazilas and supporting the families of the victims. Assistance is being arranged for those in severe financial distress,” he said.

Deowan Gias Chowdhury of the Sunamganj Citizens’ Awareness Committee (SONAC) highlighted that traffickers operate across all upazilas, particularly Jagannathpur, Chatak, Shantiganj, Dirai, and Dowarabazar. He urged the community to take a strong stance against the criminal networks while demanding strict legal action.

Superintendent of Police ABM Zakir Hossain confirmed that law enforcement is compiling detailed lists of traffickers using confidential sources and coordinating cases with local police. “If families are unable or unwilling to lodge complaints, the police will act as the complainant. Legal proceedings will commence imminently,” he said.
