Inter Miami CF has officially announced the departure of head coach Javier Mascherano. The former Argentine captain, who guided the club to its first-ever MLS Cup title just four months ago, has stepped down from his position citing “personal reasons.” The announcement comes as a significant development for the Florida-based club, occurring only seven matches into the 2026 Major League Soccer season.
The club issued a statement on Tuesday confirming that Mascherano had elected to vacate his role. According to sources cited by ESPN, Mascherano formally notified the club’s hierarchy of his decision immediately following a 2-2 draw against the New York Red Bulls last Saturday.
In the interim, Inter Miami has appointed Guillermo Hoyos as the first-team head coach. Hoyos, who was previously serving as the club’s Sporting Director, brings extensive international experience to the touchline, having managed clubs in various global leagues and previously serving as the head coach of the Bolivia national team.
In an official statement regarding his departure, Mascherano expressed gratitude toward the organisation and its staff:
“I wish to inform everyone that, for personal reasons, I have decided to step down as head coach of Inter Miami. I would like to thank the club for the trust placed in me, and the entire staff for our collective efforts. Most of all, I am grateful to the players; it is because of them that we enjoyed so many unforgettable moments.”
Mascherano, a former teammate of Lionel Messi at both FC Barcelona and the Argentina national team, transitioned into management following his illustrious playing career. He was appointed as the successor to Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino in November 2024. During his tenure of approximately 18 months, he achieved unprecedented success for the franchise.
Under Mascherano’s leadership, Inter Miami secured the 2025 MLS Cup, the first in the club’s history. He also led the team to the final of the Leagues Cup and the semi-finals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup. Statistically, he leaves as the most successful manager in the club’s history.

As of April 2026, Inter Miami occupies third place in the Eastern Conference after seven matches. While the team faced a recent exit from the CONCACAF Champions Cup at the hands of Nashville SC, Mascherano’s overall impact remains highly regarded by the ownership.
Club owner Jorge Mas paid tribute to the departing coach, stating:
“Javier will remain a part of this club’s history and will always hold a special place within the Inter Miami family. Whether it was winning the MLS Cup or the team’s historic performance in the Club World Cup, his dedication and daily hard work in leading the team will remain exemplary.”
