At least three people, including a woman and an auto-rickshaw driver, have lost their lives in a series of separate road accidents in Shibganj upazila of Bogura district, highlighting continuing concerns over highway safety along the Dhaka–Rangpur corridor.
According to highway police and local authorities, the incidents occurred between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning in different locations within the upazila. The fatalities include a truck helper, an auto-rickshaw driver, and a housewife.
Sequence of incidents
The first accident took place early Wednesday morning at Chakpara in Mokamtola area. A stationary ten-wheeler truck, which had reportedly broken down due to fuel shortage, was parked beside the Dhaka–Rangpur highway. Around 5:30 am, another ten-wheeler truck carrying bamboo lost control and crashed into the stationary vehicle from behind. The impact severely damaged the front section of both vehicles, killing truck helper Golam Mostafa (32) on the spot. The injured driver of the moving truck fled the scene immediately after the collision. Highway police later recovered both vehicles and took them into custody.
Later the same morning at around 10:30 am, another fatal incident occurred on the Mokamtola–Joypurhat road near Amtoli. An auto-rickshaw driven by Minarul Islam (25) lost control near a filling station and overturned into a roadside ditch. Minarul Islam died instantly. The owner of the vehicle, a third-gender individual, sustained injuries in the crash.
In a separate incident on Tuesday evening, Khatemon Bibi (60), a housewife from Lahiri Para Union of Bogura Sadar upazila, also died in a road accident. Her nephew had recently died of cancer in Hatibandha village under Shibganj upazila. After attending his funeral in the Hatibandha area, she was returning home at around 7:15 pm. While attempting to cross the Dhaka–Rangpur highway at Hatibandha, she was struck by a speeding microbus, which fled the scene after the collision.
