Severe Thunderstorms and Lightning Strikes Claim 22 Lives Across Bangladesh

A series of intense electrical storms and lightning strikes have resulted in a significant loss of life across several districts in Bangladesh over a 48-hour period. Official reports confirm that eight individuals were killed by lightning on Monday, 27 April 2026, following a devastating Sunday that saw 14 fatalities under similar circumstances. The cumulative death toll for the two-day period now stands at 22, underscoring the severe risk posed by pre-monsoon weather patterns in the region.

Fatalities in Sunamganj and Netrokona

The agricultural heartlands of Sunamganj and Netrokona were particularly hard-hit on Monday, as farmers and labourers engaged in the seasonal harvesting of paddy were caught in open fields during the sudden onset of storms.

In Sunamganj, three farmers were confirmed dead and three others sustained injuries. In Sunamganj Sadar Upazila, Jamir Hossain (42) of Baithakhali village and Jamir Uddin (46) of Abdullahpur village were struck while working in the haor (wetlands). Simultaneously, a young labourer identified as Abu Saleh (22) from Jamalganj Upazila was killed in a separate lightning incident within the same district. Three additional farmers in Shantiganj Upazila were injured and are currently receiving medical treatment at local facilities.

In Netrokona, the Khaliajuri Upazila administration reported three deaths. A fisherman, Abdul Motalib (55), was killed instantly while fishing in the Dhanu River during the morning hours. Later in the day, Monayem Khan Palan was struck whilst drying paddy in front of his residence in Satgaon village. The third victim, Md. Shuva Mondal, a migrant worker from Sirajganj district, was fatally struck while harvesting crops in Chayar Haor. The Officer-in-Charge of Khaliajuri Police Station, Md. Nasir Uddin, confirmed that police teams were dispatched to verify the incidents.

Tragedies in Noakhali and Habiganj

A harrowing incident was reported in Noakhali’s Hatiya Upazila, where a 20-year-old businessman, Md. Arafat Hossain, was killed by lightning in the presence of his mother. The incident occurred at approximately 2:45 pm in East Gamchakhali village as the pair were returning from a field after collecting groundnuts.

Local Union Parishad member Rashed Uddin noted that the victim’s mother, Shaela Akhter, witnessed the strike from only a short distance away. Arafat, who operated a cosmetics business in the local market, died at the scene. Hatiya Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Kabir Hossain, stated that law enforcement had been informed and were attending to the matter.

In Habiganj, one person was killed by lightning and two others died in storm-related accidents. Maksud Ali (50) of Noagaon village in Nabiganj Upazila was struck while attempting to retrieve cattle from a field during the storm. Nabiganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Ruhul Amin confirmed that the local administration is processing government assistance for Maksud’s impoverished family.

In separate incidents involving the high winds of the Kalbaishakhi (nor’wester) storm:

  • Sayed Ali (50), an auto-rickshaw driver in Chunarughat, was killed when his vehicle overturned during the gale.

  • Abdus Salam (65) of Baniyachong Upazila also lost his life in a storm-related accident.

Previous Casualties and Regional Impact

The fatalities on Monday followed a particularly lethal Sunday (26 April), during which 14 people were killed across several northern and western districts. The breakdown of Sunday’s casualties includes:

  • Gaibandha: 5 deaths

  • Thakurgaon, Sirajganj, and Jamalpur: 2 deaths each

  • Panchagarh, Bogra, and Natore: 1 death each

Scientific and Safety Context

Bangladesh is geographically prone to lightning strikes during the pre-monsoon months (March to May). Scientific data indicates that the rising temperatures and the clash between cool air from the Himalayas and warm, moist air from the Bay of Bengal create volatile atmospheric conditions. Farmers are often the most vulnerable demographic, as they are frequently exposed in open fields during the harvest season.

The government of Bangladesh has previously declared lightning a national natural disaster. Authorities continue to advise citizens to seek shelter in permanent structures during thunderstorms and to avoid standing under tall trees or near metal objects. The recent spike in fatalities highlights the urgent need for enhanced early warning systems and the installation of lightning arresters in rural haor regions to mitigate such casualties in the future.
