A tragic lightning strike in Rajbari district has claimed the life of a 37-year-old man, while miraculously sparing his three-and-a-half-year-old daughter, who was in his arms at the time of the incident.
The deceased, identified as Suman Ahmed, a resident of Bagmara area under Rajbari Sadar Upazila, was struck on Wednesday at approximately 6:45 a.m. while he was walking near his home. According to local authorities, he worked for a pharmaceutical company and was known in the community as a regular wage earner supporting his family.
Police officials confirmed the incident. Officer-in-Charge Uttam Kumar Ghosh of Rajbari Sadar Police Station stated that the death was caused by a sudden lightning strike during early morning weather conditions.
Eyewitnesses reported that Suman Ahmed was carrying his young daughter, Safia, when he stepped out of his home heading towards a nearby shop. Without warning, a bolt of lightning struck the area. The impact caused the child to be thrown from his arms onto the ground, while Suman collapsed instantly.
Local resident AKM Ripon described the scene, noting that neighbours rushed to the spot after hearing the thunderclap and found both father and daughter injured. They immediately transported Suman Ahmed to Rajbari Sadar Hospital, where attending doctors in the emergency department declared him dead upon arrival.
His daughter, Safia, sustained minor injuries, including slight bleeding from the nose and ears. Medical staff confirmed that her condition is now stable and she is out of danger.
The incident has left the local community in shock, particularly due to the rare circumstance in which the child survived such a close-range lightning strike while the father did not.
