At least 20 passengers were injured after a speeding passenger bus veered off the road and plunged into a roadside ditch in Tungi Para, Gopalganj, on Wednesday morning.
The accident occurred at Malek’s Bazar on the Gopalganj–Pirojpur regional highway in Tungi Para Upazila. According to police and fire service officials, the Dhaka-bound bus was travelling from Pirojpur when the incident took place at approximately 11:00 am.
Authorities said the vehicle, operated by Imad Paribahan, was reportedly moving at a high speed before the driver attempted to give way to another bus on the narrow highway. During the manoeuvre, the front tyre of the bus suddenly burst, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle then skidded off the road and overturned into a roadside ditch.
The impact left at least 20 passengers injured, prompting an immediate emergency response. Personnel from the local fire service and police station arrived at the scene shortly after receiving reports of the crash. Rescue teams evacuated injured passengers from the damaged vehicle and arranged transportation to nearby medical facilities.
The injured were taken to hospitals in Gopalganj and Tungi Para for treatment. Hospital sources indicated that several passengers sustained minor to moderate injuries, though none were reported to be in life-threatening condition at the time of filing this report.
Officials confirmed that no fatalities had been recorded following the incident.

Road accidents remain a recurring concern on regional highways in Bangladesh, where overspeeding, poor road discipline, and mechanical failures are frequently identified as contributing factors. Safety experts have repeatedly called for stricter vehicle fitness inspections, improved driver training, and better enforcement of traffic regulations to reduce casualties on inter-district routes.
Police said the bus has been recovered from the ditch and further investigation into the cause of the accident is under way.
