Mamunul Islam Announces Professional Retirement with Final Farewell Match

Mamunul Islam, the esteemed former captain of the Bangladesh national football team and one of the most prominent figures in the country’s modern sporting history, has formally announced his retirement from all forms of professional football. The 37-year-old midfielder is set to conclude his distinguished career following a final domestic appearance in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).

The announcement was made via a statement on social media, where Mamunul confirmed that his farewell match will take place on Friday, 1 May 2026. Representing his current club, Fortis FC, he will face Rahmatganj MFS at the Bashundhara Kings Arena in Dhaka.

A Storied Career in National and Club Football

Mamunul Islam’s journey in professional football has spanned nearly two decades, during which he became synonymous with the midfield engine of the “Bengal Tigers.” He represented the Bangladesh national team in 59 international matches, contributing three goals. His leadership was a defining characteristic of his tenure, as he captained the national side during several critical international assignments, earning a reputation for his vision, set-piece delivery, and tactical intelligence.

Throughout his domestic career, Mamunul achieved the rare distinction of playing for almost all of Bangladesh’s “Big Four” elite clubs. His resume includes successful stints at:

  • Dhaka Abahani Limited

  • Mohammedan Sporting Club

  • Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra

  • Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club

His trophy cabinet reflects his impact on the pitch, having secured multiple league titles and domestic cups with these various outfits. Mamunul was often the highest-paid local player during the peak of his career, a testament to his market value and influence in the South Asian footballing landscape.

International Recognition and the ISL Milestone

One of the most notable chapters of Mamunul’s career was his foray into international club football. In 2014, he became the first Bangladeshi footballer to be signed by an Indian Super League (ISL) franchise. He joined Atlético de Kolkata (now known as Mohun Bagan Super Giant) during the league’s inaugural season.

While his playing time in the ISL was limited, his inclusion in a squad that eventually became the first-ever ISL champions was viewed as a landmark achievement for Bangladeshi football. It provided a significant boost to the profile of players from the country, proving that domestic talent could transition into higher-profile regional leagues.

The Final Farewell

In his retirement message, Mamunul expressed a sense of poignancy regarding his departure from the sport. While he had originally harboured the ambition to retire while wearing the national team jersey on the pitch, various administrative and scheduling factors necessitated a different conclusion. Instead, he has opted to bid farewell to the professional game through the domestic league that served as the foundation of his success.

“I am Mamunul Islam, former player and captain of the Bangladesh national football team,” he wrote. “Arriving at the final chapter of this long professional football journey, I am going to end my career through the Fortis FC vs Rahmatganj match on 1 May.”

Mamunul extended a sincere invitation to his supporters, fans, and colleagues to attend the match at the Bashundhara Kings Arena. He emphasised that the presence of the fans on his final day as a professional athlete would be the “greatest achievement” of his entire career.

Legacy and Future Outlook

As Mamunul Islam prepares to hang up his boots, the Bangladeshi football community reflects on the departure of a player who bridged the gap between different generations of talent. His retirement marks the end of an era for a midfield maestro who remained a constant fixture in the national consciousness for over 15 years.

Following his retirement on Friday, Mamunul is expected to remain involved in the development of the sport, though he has yet to formally announce whether he will pursue coaching, administration, or punditry. His final match against Rahmatganj on 1 May serves as the ultimate opportunity for the footballing fraternity to honour a dedicated servant of the game.
