A sudden and unexplained incident involving the deaths of four members of the same family in Mumbai, India, has prompted an ongoing police investigation and forensic examination, with early findings challenging initial assumptions that the cause was food-related poisoning.
According to reports, including those published by NDTV, the incident occurred after a family gathering at the residence of local businessman Abdullah Dokhadia. On Saturday evening, Dokhadia hosted relatives and guests for a meal that included mutton pulao. Following the departure of visitors, the family later consumed watermelon during the early hours of the night.
By approximately 5 a.m., all four family members—Abdullah Dokhadia, his wife Nasrin, and their two teenage daughters, Zainab and Ayesha—began experiencing severe vomiting and diarrhoea. Their condition deteriorated rapidly, and all four died within hours of falling ill.
Preliminary forensic observations
Initial post-mortem examinations revealed unusual findings that prompted further investigation. Medical examiners reportedly observed abnormal greenish discolouration in several vital organs, including the brain, heart, and intestines. Such findings are not typically associated with routine food poisoning cases and required additional toxicological analysis.
A significant development in the investigation was the detection of morphine in the body of Abdullah Dokhadia. Morphine is a strong opioid analgesic generally used for pain management in controlled medical settings. Authorities have not yet determined whether its presence was due to medical administration, accidental exposure, or any other cause, and further tests are ongoing.
Official position and investigation status
The state food and drug administration has stated that, based on preliminary assessment, there is currently no confirmed link between the consumption of watermelon and the deaths. It has also been noted that the family had eaten mutton pulao earlier in the evening without any immediate adverse effects.
Police have registered an accidental death case and are awaiting viscera analysis reports, which are expected to provide more precise toxicological insights. These tests typically examine internal organs and bodily fluids to detect poisons, drugs, or other harmful substances that may not be identifiable through initial examination alone.
Investigators are also considering a broader range of possibilities, including potential exposure to toxic substances and whether any external or internal factors unrelated to food consumption may have contributed to the deaths. However, authorities have emphasised that no conclusions have been reached.
