The local community of Dhanmondi, a prominent residential and commercial hub in the capital, was struck by a somber event on Saturday, 2 May 2026, following the sudden death of a young academic administrator. Al-Mokabbir Arnab Islam, aged 33, lost his life after falling from the rooftop of an 11-storey residential building. The deceased was a well-known figure in the education sector of the city, serving as the director of a private educational institution in the Jatrabari area.
According to law enforcement officials, the incident occurred at approximately 12:00 pm. Preliminary reports suggest that Arnab Islam fell from the rooftop of the building where he resided. Upon receiving the distress call, a team from the Dhanmondi Police Station arrived at the scene to find the body lying on the concrete surface of the building’s internal courtyard—a vertical open space typical of modern high-rise architecture designed for ventilation.
The victim was discovered on the hard concrete floor within the void of the building. Police personnel secured the perimeter and conducted an initial forensic examination of the site before the remains were moved for further medical procedures.
Arnab Islam was the son of the late Rafiqul Islam, a distinguished educator who founded the Rafiqul Islam School and College located in Jatrabari. Following his father’s demise, Arnab had assumed the leadership and operational responsibilities of the institution. Under his directorship, the college continued its mission to provide secondary and higher secondary education to students in the eastern part of the capital.
In his personal life, Arnab was unmarried and resided in a family-owned flat in the Dhanmondi building. He lived there with his sisters, while his mother lived separately at a different residence. Family members described him as a dedicated professional committed to maintaining his father’s educational legacy.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Mohammad Rajib of the Dhanmondi Police Station, who is leading the primary investigation, provided specific details regarding the legal steps being taken. Following the recovery of the body from the building’s central void, the police initiated the necessary legal protocols to document the scene and collect potential evidence.
“The body was recovered from the concrete floor in the middle gap of the flat complex,” SI Rajib stated. “After completing the preliminary legal formalities at the site, we dispatched the body to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) morgue for a comprehensive post-mortem examination.”
While initial conversations with grieving relatives suggest that the fall might have been the result of an unfortunate accident—possibly due to a lapse in caution while on the rooftop—the police are maintaining an open investigation. The authorities have emphasised that while “accidental falling” is the current preliminary theory based on family testimonies, a definitive conclusion regarding the cause of death will only be reached upon the receipt of the formal autopsy report from the medical examiners at DMCH.
The incident has highlighted the ongoing concerns regarding rooftop safety and boundary wall heights in high-rise residential structures across Dhaka. Dhanmondi, known for its mix of legacy houses and modern skyscrapers, often sees rooftops used for recreation or domestic purposes, making safety compliance a critical factor.
The Dhanmondi police are currently reviewing whether there were any security lapses or environmental factors that contributed to the fall. They are also expected to examine CCTV footage from the building, if available, to establish a chronological timeline of Arnab’s movements prior to 12:00 pm. As of now, the case remains under active investigation, and the academic community in Jatrabari has expressed profound shock at the loss of their young director. The remains will be handed over to the family for burial once the forensic requirements are fulfilled.
