In a landmark transaction within the Indian Premier League (IPL), the ownership of the Rajasthan Royals has undergone a significant transition. Lakshmi Mittal, the pre-eminent industrialist frequently referred to as the “Steel Magnate” or the “King of Steel,” has acquired a controlling interest in the franchise. The inaugural champions of the IPL are now under the stewardship of Mr Mittal and the billionaire businessman Adar Poonawalla.
The acquisition was confirmed via a joint statement issued today, revealing a comprehensive ownership restructuring. The deal values the franchise and its associated global entities at an enterprise value of approximately $1.65 billion (roughly £1.3 billion or 20,250 crore BDT). This transition occurs mid-season, marking one of the most substantial financial shifts in the history of the league.
The new ownership structure is a collaborative effort between two of India’s most influential corporate figures. Lakshmi Mittal, the Executive Chairman of ArcelorMittal, brings the weight of the global steel industry to the franchise. Joining him is Adar Poonawalla, the Chief Executive Officer of the Serum Institute of India and Chairman of Poonawalla Fincorp.
The Serum Institute, headquartered in Pune, is recognised as the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer by volume. The entry of such high-profile investors underscores the escalating commercial valuation of cricket franchises on the global stage. According to the terms of the agreement:
The Mittal Family: Will hold a commanding 75% stake in the franchise.
Adar Poonawalla: Has acquired approximately 18% of the ownership.
Existing Investors: The remaining equity continues to be held by the current investor group, including the previous majority owner, Manoj Badale.
Despite the change in majority control, Manoj Badale will remain actively involved with the franchise, retaining a seat on the board to ensure continuity in governance and strategy.
The $1.65 billion valuation extends beyond the IPL entity alone. The transaction encompasses the entirety of the “Royals” global sporting portfolio. Consequently, the new owners now oversee:
Rajasthan Royals (Indian Premier League)
Paarl Royals (South Africa’s SA20)
Barbados Royals (Caribbean Premier League)
This multi-national footprint positions the Mittal and Poonawalla partnership as major stakeholders in the evolving landscape of global T20 cricket.
In the official statement, Lakshmi Mittal expressed a personal connection to the investment, noting that his family roots trace back to the state of Rajasthan. He remarked, “I have a great passion for cricket, and given my family’s ties to Rajasthan, there could be no team closer to my heart than the Rajasthan Royals.”
Adar Poonawalla echoed this sentiment, highlighting the franchise’s prestigious history and his commitment to its long-term development. Manoj Badale welcomed the transition, stating that the new owners’ ambition and connection to India make them the “ideal custodians” for the team’s future.
The Rajasthan Royals historically secured the first-ever IPL title in 2008 under the captaincy of the late Shane Warne. However, the franchise has endured an 18-year trophy drought since that inaugural success. The current season has seen a resurgence in their form, bolstered by the emergence of young talents such as Vaibhav Suryavanshi, making them a formidable contender for the title.
As of the latest standings, Rajasthan has secured 12 points from 10 matches, placing them in the fourth position on the league table. They remain in close contention for the top spot, trailing the league leaders, Punjab Kings, by a solitary point. With the infusion of new capital and strategic oversight from the Mittal and Poonawalla families, the franchise enters a new era focused on reclaiming its position at the pinnacle of the IPL.
