The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has officially ratified and extended a disciplinary sanction originally imposed by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) against Argentine winger Gianluca Prestianni. The decision has placed the Benfica player’s participation in the upcoming FIFA World Cup in significant jeopardy, casting a shadow over what was anticipated to be his tournament debut for the national side.
The disciplinary proceedings against the 20-year-old winger stem from an incident that occurred during a UEFA Champions League fixture approximately two weeks ago. Prestianni was accused of directing homophobic slurs towards Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior. Evidence from the match indicated that Prestianni deliberately obscured his mouth with his jersey while uttering the offensive remarks, an act interpreted by officials as a calculated attempt to avoid detection by lip-readers and broadcast cameras.
Following an initial investigation, UEFA handed down a six-match suspension to the player. Under the terms of the ruling, three of these matches are to be served immediately, while the remaining three are currently held under a period of suspension, pending the player’s future conduct.
In a significant escalation of the penalty, FIFA released a formal statement confirming that the sanction would carry over to the international stage. The global governing body’s intervention ensures that the ban is not restricted to European club competitions but remains “globally effective.” This means that the matches missed must include officially sanctioned international fixtures, directly impacting Prestianni’s eligibility for the Argentine national team.
The timing of the ban presents a complex logistical challenge for Argentina’s head coach, Lionel Scaloni. As the reigning world champions prepare to defend their title, the availability of squad members is paramount. The confirmation of the global ban implies that even if Prestianni is selected for the final tournament roster, he would be unavailable for the opening stages of the competition.
As of the current time, the Argentine coaching staff has not issued a definitive statement regarding Prestianni’s inclusion in the final 26-man squad. The loss of the Benfica winger would deprive the “Albiceleste” of a versatile attacking option, though the squad maintains significant depth in the wide positions.
Argentina is positioned in a group that requires extensive travel across North American venues. Their campaign is scheduled to begin on 17 June in Kansas City, where they will face Algeria. This opening fixture is crucial for the defending champions as they seek to establish early momentum.
Following the opener, the team will travel to Arlington, Texas, for their second group encounter against Austria on 22 June. The final match of the group stage will see Argentina face Jordan, a nation making its historic debut in the World Cup finals. Should the suspension remain unserved or if the suspended portion of the ban is activated due to further misconduct, Prestianni could potentially miss the entirety of these group-stage proceedings.
The decision by FIFA to uphold UEFA’s punishment aligns with the governing body’s intensified “Zero Tolerance” policy regarding discriminatory behaviour. By extending a continental club ban to the World Cup, FIFA has reinforced its protocol that offensive conduct in any professional setting will have consequences for a player’s international career.
Prestianni, who joined Benfica from Vélez Sarsfield and has been regarded as one of Argentina’s brightest prospects, now faces a critical juncture in his career. The enforcement of this ban serves as a documented reminder of the disciplinary parity maintained between regional confederations and the global governing body during major tournament cycles.
