Rain and Gusty Winds Forecast for Southern Bangladesh

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has issued a weather warning indicating that several areas in the southern region of the country are likely to experience rain accompanied by gusty and squally winds. According to an official weather bulletin released by the meteorological office on Saturday (30 May), this cautionary notice will remain in effect for specific river ports across the country from 3:00 pm until 1:00 am.

Cautionary Signal Issued for Southern River Ports

According to meteorological data provided by the BMD, squally or gusty winds blowing from the west or north-west are expected to sweep over the Khulna, Barishal, and Patuakhali regions. The wind speed in these areas is projected to reach velocities between 45 and 60 kilometres per hour (km/h). Additionally, temporary rain or thundershowers are highly likely to occur concurrently within these specific southern territories.

In response to these adverse weather conditions, the river ports located within the Khulna, Barishal, and Patuakhali regions have been instructed to hoist Cautionary Signal Number 1 (with a reinstatement of Signal 1). Owing to the squally winds and the resulting inclement weather, the weather office has strictly advised all water vessels operating in the affected channels and rivers to navigate with utmost caution.

Nationwide 24-Hour Meteorological Forecast

In a separate segment of the daily bulletin, the meteorological department detailed a nationwide forecast valid for 24 hours starting from 9:00 am. The report indicates that temporary gusty or squally winds, lightning flashes, and light to moderate rain or thundershowers are anticipated across multiple divisions. While these conditions will affect a few places in the Chattogram division, they will also manifest in isolated spots across the remaining seven divisions: Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, and Sylhet. Furthermore, certain areas within the Chattogram division are expected to witness moderately heavy to heavy rainfall during this period.

Analysis of Regional Meteorological Data

The recorded statistical data reveals that Gopalganj registered the highest volume of rainfall in the country over the 24-hour period ending at 6:00 am, measuring 39 millimetres. Concurrently, the lowest temperature nationwide was observed in the Rajshahi district, dropping to 21.5 degrees Celsius.

In the capital city of Dhaka, atmospheric measurements showed that the wind speed remained relatively mild, averaging between 8 and 12 kilometres per hour, originating predominantly from the south and south-east directions. The relative humidity of the air, measured early in the morning at 6:00 am, stood at a high of 89 per cent, indicating significant moisture levels in the lower atmosphere. Finally, the astronomical schedule confirmed that sunset in Dhaka for the day is set for 6:41 pm, whilst the sunrise for the following morning is scheduled for 5:11 am. Transport authorities and internal water transport operators have been urged to monitor these changing conditions continuously.
