A 14-year-old schoolboy went missing in the Jamuna River after attempting to rescue a drowning child. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon, 3 June 2026, in the Bhatpara area under Kaijuri Union of Shahjadpur Upazila in Sirajganj district. Emergency services deployed specialized diving teams to conduct search and rescue operations, which remained ongoing following the incident.
The missing adolescent has been identified as Tamim Hossain, a Year 7 student. He is the son of Lashkar Ali Mollah, a garment factory worker. Tamim ordinarily resided with his father in the Konabari area of Gazipur, where he pursued his institutional education. He had returned to his ancestral village in Sirajganj to celebrate the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha holiday with his extended family.
According to the victim’s elder sister, Swapna Khatun, Tamim had gone to the Jamuna River near their residence at midday to bathe, accompanied by several other male members of the household. Because Tamim did not possess swimming skills, he restricted his movement to the shallower parts of the river, wading only up to his waist.
While they were in the water, a seven-year-old child bathing nearby inadvertently wandered into a deeper section of the river and began to submerge. Observing the child in distress, Tamim immediately moved forward to execute a rescue. Although he succeeded in assisting the child, Tamim lost his footing, fell into the deep current of the river, and began crying out for assistance.
Bystanders and family members quickly responded to the shouting. While the surrounding individuals successfully extracted the seven-year-old child from the water alive, Tamim was swept away by the river current and disappeared beneath the surface before rescuers could reach him.
Following the accident, local residents informed the emergency services. A regional unit from the Fire Service and Civil Defence was dispatched to the location to initiate a preliminary surface search. To facilitate deep-water search operations, the local authorities requested assistance from specialized personnel from the Rajshahi Fire Service division.
