A parked Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner at Frankfurt Airport in Germany suffered a sudden and dramatic nose landing gear failure, causing the aircraft’s front section to drop sharply to the ground and leaving several Lufthansa ground staff injured. The incident occurred on Thursday while preparations were underway for a scheduled Lufthansa flight to Los Angeles. According to reports from the Associated Press, boarding had not yet commenced, and only crew members and ground personnel were present on board at the time.
Lufthansa confirmed in a formal statement that the aircraft’s nose section unexpectedly collapsed while it was stationary at the gate. The airline added that multiple employees sustained injuries of varying severity and are currently receiving medical treatment. As a precautionary measure, the planned transatlantic departure was immediately cancelled, and the aircraft was taken out of service pending inspection.
Footage circulating from the scene shows the aircraft’s nose landing gear abruptly shifting forward before the front fuselage drops several metres, striking the ground. In the chaotic moments that followed, a nearby ground crew member is seen quickly moving away from the danger zone. The impact also caused structural damage to the nose gear bay doors, which were torn off during the collapse.
Boeing stated that it is aware of the incident and is cooperating fully with Lufthansa and aviation authorities in the ongoing investigation. Industry experts have described the failure of a stationary aircraft’s nose landing gear as highly unusual, although they caution that it is too early to determine the precise cause.
Former US Federal Aviation Administration accident investigator Jeff Guzzetti noted that such events are “extremely uncommon” and emphasised the need for a detailed technical inquiry. Potential contributing factors, he suggested, could include mechanical failure, maintenance errors, or pre-existing structural damage. Investigators are expected to examine the aircraft’s maintenance records, landing gear system data, and operational history in detail.

The affected aircraft had entered Lufthansa’s fleet only in January of this year and had been in commercial service since February, operating more than 130 flights before the incident. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, a wide-body long-haul aircraft introduced into commercial service in 2011, is widely used for intercontinental routes and can carry up to 296 passengers depending on configuration.
This is not the first time a Boeing 787 has experienced a nose landing gear-related issue. In 2021, a similar incident occurred at London Heathrow Airport during maintenance testing, when an improperly positioned locking pin led to the aircraft’s front section collapsing.
The Boeing 787 programme has faced scrutiny in recent years due to manufacturing and quality control concerns, which have at times led to temporary delivery suspensions.
