Child Deaths Rise Amid Measles Symptoms Nationwide

In the past 24 hours, five more children have tragically lost their lives due to measles and its associated symptoms, according to the latest data from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). This brings the total number of child fatalities from the disease so far this year to 610.

Laboratory tests have confirmed measles in at least 91 of these deceased children, while an additional 519 succumbed after exhibiting symptoms consistent with the illness. Health authorities emphasise that many of these cases remain linked to delayed vaccination and widespread outbreaks in densely populated areas.

Between 8:00 AM yesterday and 8:00 AM today, a total of 1,168 children were admitted to hospitals nationwide showing symptoms indicative of measles. Among these, laboratory testing confirmed the presence of the virus in 243 children, highlighting the continuing spread of the disease across the country.

Public health experts warn that the persistence of measles cases underscores the urgent need for comprehensive vaccination campaigns and improved community awareness. The DGHS has urged parents to ensure their children are fully immunised and to seek medical attention promptly if symptoms such as high fever, rash, or cough appear.

A closer look at this year’s figures demonstrates the severity of the outbreak:

Category Number of Children
Confirmed measles deaths (lab-tested) 91
Deaths with measles-like symptoms 519
Total deaths 610
Hospital admissions with symptoms (last 24 hrs) 1,168
Laboratory-confirmed infections (last 24 hrs) 243

Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have reiterated the importance of early detection and prompt treatment. Hospitals have been advised to maintain isolation protocols for suspected cases to prevent further spread.

The current outbreak serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threat posed by measles, a disease that remains preventable through timely vaccination. Public health officials are calling for intensified community outreach and nationwide immunisation drives to curb the ongoing crisis.
