A tragic railway accident in eastern Bangladesh has claimed the life of a 20-year-old man who reportedly attempted to save an elderly passenger from an oncoming high-speed train.
The deceased, identified as Tofael Ahmed, was killed on Thursday evening at Kasba Railway Station in Brahmanbaria district. He was the son of Anwar Hossain from Akchina village under Kasba West Union.
According to eyewitness accounts, the station area was busy at the time, with local residents and visitors gathering in the late afternoon as part of their routine leisure activities. Tofael had arrived at the station with friends.
The incident occurred when a passenger disembarking from a train reportedly stepped onto the central track. At the same time, the high-speed Subarna Express was approaching from the direction of Chattogram. Witnesses said the elderly man found himself in immediate danger as the express train sped through the station.
Seeing the imminent threat, Tofael rushed onto the track in an attempt to pull the elderly passenger to safety. He succeeded in moving the man away from danger, but was himself struck by the oncoming train moments later. The force of the collision threw him a considerable distance.
Friends and bystanders quickly rescued him and transported him to Kasba Upazila Health Complex, where attending physicians declared him dead on arrival.
Local authorities confirmed the incident. Station Master Md Hanif Mia stated that the Subarna Express was passing through Kasba Station at high speed when the accident occurred during the rescue attempt.
Officer-in-Charge S M Shafiqul Islam of Akhaura Railway Police also confirmed the fatality, noting that the body was handed over to the family without an autopsy following their request.
The incident has triggered widespread grief in the local community, particularly among Tofael’s classmates and neighbours, who remember him as a helpful and courageous young man.
