Bangladesh’s celebrated singer, composer and music producer Habib Wahid is preparing to release a new original single titled Premer Kolonko, marking a stylistic shift after a successful run of folk-fusion projects that have recently dominated his output.
The upcoming track follows the strong reception of his recent releases Moha Jadu and Koi Roila Re, both of which reinforced his position as one of the most versatile figures in contemporary South Asian music. While those songs leaned heavily into folk-inspired fusion, Premer Kolonko signals a return to a more original, contemporary songwriting approach.
The lyrics for the new single have been penned by filmmaker and lyricist S A Haque Olike, representing a relatively rare collaboration between him and Habib in recent years. Habib himself has composed and arranged the track, maintaining full creative control over its musical direction. The accompanying music video has been directed by Chandan Roy Chowdhury, suggesting a strong visual narrative to complement the song’s emotional tone.
Speaking about the project, Habib explained that the decision to move away—at least temporarily—from consecutive folk-fusion releases was intentional. He noted that he wanted to offer listeners something distinct while still retaining his signature experimental edge. According to him, Premer Kolonko is designed to bring a refreshed musical identity through its lyrics, melody and arrangement.
Earlier this year, Habib attracted significant attention through his appearance on Coke Studio Bangla, where he collaborated with Tajik vocalist Mehrnigori Rustam on the folk-fusion track Moha Jadu. The performance was widely discussed and helped renew public interest in his fusion-driven projects.
This momentum continued with Koi Roila Re, released during the Eid season. The track was particularly notable for marking the return of vocalist Kaya to a Habib-produced song after more than two decades. Kaya, who had previously featured prominently on Habib’s acclaimed album Krishno, joined forces with contemporary artist and producer Muza in the project, further enhancing its appeal among long-time listeners.
Together, these releases have reaffirmed Habib’s ability to bridge generational sounds while experimenting across genres. With Premer Kolonko, he appears to be balancing that experimental identity with a renewed focus on original composition.
