Child Found Dead in Waterlogged Pit

A five-year-old boy was found dead in a rainwater-filled pit in Goaland Upazila of Rajbari district after going missing for around two hours, prompting grief and shock in the local community.

The deceased, identified as Sanvir Mollah (5), was the son of Faruk Mollah of Tamtiz Uddin Mridha Para in Ward No. 7 of Daulatdia Union. He had recently been staying with his mother, Sumi Khatun, at his maternal grandfather’s house in Saidalpara village.

According to family accounts, the incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon. The child reportedly went missing shortly after asking his mother for drinking water. While his mother stepped outside to fetch water, the boy is believed to have left the house unnoticed. When she returned, she could not find him, triggering an immediate search by family members and neighbours.

After approximately two hours of searching, locals discovered the child lying motionless face-down in a large pit filled with rainwater near the bank of the dried Padma River, adjacent to the eastern side of Jamal Khan’s farm house in Saidalpara. The pit, which had accumulated rainwater, is believed to have posed a hidden hazard in the area.

Residents quickly retrieved the child and rushed him to Goaland Upazila Health Complex. However, attending doctors in the emergency department declared him dead upon arrival.

The body was handed over to the relatives on Wednesday night. A case of unnatural death has been filed at Goaland Ghat Police Station.
