A fatal road traffic collision in Palashbari, Gaibandha, has claimed the life of an e-rickshaw driver and left a female passenger seriously injured after a passenger bus struck their vehicle on a regional highway.
The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon in the Burirghor area along the Gaibandha–Palashbari regional road. According to police and eyewitness accounts, the crash involved a battery-powered e-rickshaw and a passenger bus travelling from Dhaka under the banner of Orin Paribahan.
The deceased has been identified as Ferdous Mia, 50, a resident of Kismat Durgapur in Khord Komorpur union under Sadullapur upazila. He was operating the e-rickshaw at the time of the collision. The impact of the crash was severe, leaving him dead at the scene.
A female passenger in the vehicle, identified as Shapla Begum, 30, sustained serious injuries. Locals immediately rescued her and transported her to Gaibandha General Hospital. As her condition deteriorated, doctors referred her to Rangpur for advanced medical treatment.
Eyewitnesses reported that the Dhaka-bound bus lost control and collided directly with the e-rickshaw, crushing the smaller vehicle. The sudden impact caused chaos in the area, prompting nearby residents to rush to the scene and assist the victims before emergency services arrived.
Police from Palashbari Police Station later reached the site, recovered the body, and initiated legal procedures. Authorities have confirmed that efforts are underway to identify and seize the bus involved in the accident, and appropriate legal action will be taken against those responsible.
Family members of both victims have been informed. Shapla Begum is reported to be the daughter of local representative Sirajul Islam of the same village, adding further distress to the close-knit rural community affected by the tragedy.
Officials have noted that the Gaibandha–Palashbari highway has seen repeated traffic accidents in recent years, often involving high-speed passenger buses and slow-moving three-wheeled vehicles, raising concerns over road safety enforcement and mixed-traffic management.
