A young man has been killed in Munshiganj town in what police suspect to be a fatal escalation of a longstanding dispute over outstanding payments. The incident took place in the Jasimnagar area under the municipal jurisdiction, with the victim’s body recovered by police on Sunday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Md Arif Bepari (32), son of the late Motin Bepari from Paighoria area of the municipality. Arif worked as an assistant butcher at Munshirhat market and had been living in a rented house near Jasimnagar.
According to police and family sources, Arif was allegedly killed in connection with a financial dispute involving his younger brother over unpaid dues amounting to approximately Tk 49,000. The family claims that tensions escalated after attempts were made to recover the money from a butcher named Noor Mohammad of the neighbouring Char Kishorganj area.
Sequence of Events
Local accounts suggest that Arif’s brother, Akash, who also worked in the meat trade at Munshirhat market, had business transactions with Noor Mohammad. Following a disagreement over payments, Akash reportedly detained Noor Mohammad with the assistance of others and handed him over to the local butcher association for mediation.
The situation intensified when a local meat trader, Enayet Hossain of Joginighat area, arrived at the market with associates attempting to secure Noor Mohammad’s release. This led to a heated confrontation between both sides, during which Arif was allegedly involved in verbal exchanges and a physical altercation.
Family members allege that Enayet Hossain and his associates issued threats to both Arif and his brother during the confrontation. They further claim that these threats later culminated in Arif’s killing.
Discovery of the Body
In the early hours of Sunday, several local women reportedly spotted a body lying in a field adjacent to their homes. Upon closer inspection, they discovered it was Arif, bearing visible stab wounds. Police were immediately informed, following which officers from Munshiganj Sadar Police Station recovered the body and sent it to Munshiganj General Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Senior police officials later visited the scene and confirmed that the incident is being treated as a suspected case of murder linked to prior enmity.
