The reigning world champions, Argentina, will launch their title defence against Algeria in their opening Group J fixture of the FIFA World Cup. The match is scheduled to be played at the Kansas City Stadium on Wednesday at 7:00 am Bangladesh Time (BST). Argentina, who enter the tournament aiming to retain their global crown, face a competitive African side currently holding the 27th position in the official FIFA world rankings.
Historically, fixtures between Argentina and Algeria have been exceptionally rare, with this upcoming World Cup group match representing only the second time the two senior national teams have met on the pitch.
Their sole prior encounter took place nearly two decades ago, on 5 June 2007, at the Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona, Spain. That international friendly served as the final warm-up match for manager Alfio Basile’s Argentina squad prior to their departure for the 2007 Copa América in Venezuela—a tournament where the South American side eventually finished as runners-up after losing to Brazil in the final. The star-studded 2007 Argentine line-up featured iconic veterans like Roberto Ayala, Juan Sebastián Verón, and Juan Román Riquelme, alongside young, emerging talents including Lionel Messi and Fernando Gago.
The 2007 meeting produced a highly competitive, high-scoring affair that ended in a narrow 4–3 victory for Argentina.
For that match, Alfio Basile deployed a formidable starting eleven. Roberto Abbondanzieri started in goal, shielded by a defensive line of Gabriel Milito, Roberto Ayala, Nicolás Burdisso, and Javier Pinola. The midfield was anchored by Javier Zanetti, Fernando Gago, and Esteban Cambiasso, while the attacking trio consisted of Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez, and Diego Milito.
The match progressed through a rapid sequence of goals:
2nd Minute: Carlos Tevez opened the scoring for Argentina by successfully converting a penalty within the first ninety seconds.
11th Minute: Algeria responded quickly, with Anthar Yahia scoring the equaliser nine minutes later.
42nd Minute: Madjid Bougherra scored shortly before the half-time interval to give the African side a surprise lead.
55th Minute: Lionel Messi scored to level the match for Argentina.
58th Minute: Esteban Cambiasso scored just three minutes later to restore the lead for the South Americans.
73rd Minute: Lionel Messi scored his second goal of the match, extending Argentina’s lead to 4–2.
75th Minute: Nadir Belhadj scored for Algeria with fifteen minutes remaining, narrowing the final deficit.
Nineteen years after that initial encounter, the two nations are scheduled to face each other for the second time in history as they open Group J of the World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Lionel Scaloni’s Argentine squad will be determined to secure three points to start their title retention campaign on a strong footing. Conversely, Algeria—known as the “Desert Foxes”—will look to rely on their pace and the technical proficiency of their forwards to cause an upset, drawing tactical inspiration from their resilient 4–3 performance against Argentina in 2007.
