Airport Incident Sparks Diplomatic Tension

The Acting High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh, Pawan Badhe, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka on Monday afternoon following an incident involving a senior Bangladeshi official at Delhi’s international airport. The Government of Bangladesh expressed strong displeasure over what it described as an “unwarranted and unexpected obstruction” and formally sought clarification from New Delhi.

According to senior officials at the Foreign Ministry, the incident occurred on Sunday evening when immigration authorities at Delhi airport allegedly prevented the entry of Jahid Ur Rahman, Information Adviser to the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, despite prior diplomatic notification and clearance arrangements communicated through official channels. The situation quickly escalated into a diplomatic concern.

Officials further stated that after high-level intervention, entry permission was eventually granted. However, by that time, the Bangladeshi delegation had already revised its travel plans and opted not to proceed with the scheduled visit to Delhi. Instead, the delegation altered its itinerary and returned to Dhaka via Colombo, arriving on Monday afternoon.

The delegation had been expected to participate in a two-day high-level meeting of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), focusing on regional cooperation, maritime security, and economic integration. The abrupt disruption of the visit has raised concerns within diplomatic circles, given the significance of the platform in fostering multilateral engagement across the region.

Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Khalilur Rahman described the incident as “regrettable” and noted that it did not align with established diplomatic norms. Meanwhile, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obayed Islam stated that the government was actively gathering full details and expected a clear explanation from the Indian authorities.

Diplomatic analysts suggest that the episode could raise questions regarding coordination between immigration authorities and diplomatic protocols, particularly when official travel is pre-cleared through diplomatic channels. They emphasise that such incidents, though rare, can create unnecessary friction if not promptly clarified and addressed through established mechanisms.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka has indicated that the matter remains under diplomatic review through official channels between the two countries. Both sides are reportedly engaged in ongoing communication aimed at clarifying procedural discrepancies and preventing similar occurrences in the future.

Officials in Dhaka have expressed hope that existing diplomatic coordination frameworks will be strengthened to ensure smoother handling of official visits. The incident has nevertheless sparked discussion within regional diplomatic circles, underscoring the sensitivity of protocol adherence in bilateral relations.
