International Father’s Day is being celebrated globally today, 21 June, to honour the paternal bonds, responsibilities, and affection that fathers provide. Observed annually on the third Sunday of June in the majority of nations, including Bangladesh, the day serves as an occasion for children to express gratitude through gifts, family gatherings, and tributes shared across social media platforms.
The establishment of Father’s Day as a recognised event originated in the United States during the early 20th century. The earliest recorded observance took place in Fairmont, West Virginia, in 1908, where a special service was held to honour fathers.
However, the campaign to achieve widespread recognition for the day was primarily led by Sonora Smart Dodd of Washington. Following the death of her mother, Dodd and her five siblings were raised solely by their father, William Jackson Smart. Inspired by her father’s dedication, Dodd advocated for an official day for fathers, mirroring the existing Mother’s Day celebrations. Due to her efforts, the first statewide celebration of Father’s Day occurred in Washington on 19 June 1910.
Following its initial success, the movement gathered momentum across the United States, gradually securing formal legislative and presidential endorsements over several decades.
| Year | Milestone and Official Action |
| 1913 | A bill was introduced to the United States Congress seeking official national recognition for Father’s Day. |
| 1924 | US President Calvin Coolidge provided formal support to the nationwide observance of the day. |
| 1966 | US President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation establishing the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. |
| 1972 | US President Richard Nixon signed the official legislation into law, establishing Father’s Day as a permanent national holiday. |
While the third Sunday of June remains the most widely adopted date for Father’s Day internationally, global practices vary. Due to distinct cultural, historical, or religious traditions, certain countries choose alternative dates throughout the calendar year to honour fatherhood. Nevertheless, the core objective of the day remains universal: recognising the foundational role fathers play in providing security, guidance, and support within the family unit.
