Police in Sherpur’s Nalitabari upazila have detained three individuals following the recovery of a pickup truck loaded with 273 bottles of various brands of Indian-made liquor during a targeted anti-smuggling operation on Monday morning (22 June).
According to law enforcement officials, the seizure was made in the Nayani Kanda Goruhati area after police acted on a confidential tip-off suggesting that a consignment of illegal alcohol was being transported through a border route. Acting swiftly on the intelligence, officers established a checkpoint and began inspecting vehicles passing through the area.
During the operation, a yellow pickup truck drew suspicion. When police signalled the vehicle to stop, the occupants reportedly attempted to flee the scene, prompting officers to intervene and apprehend them on the spot. A thorough search of the vehicle subsequently led to the discovery of 273 bottles of Indian liquor of different brands, carefully concealed within the pickup.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Rubel Mia (45), son of Sorohab Ali of Dighirpar village in Jhenaigati upazila; Lal Chan (23), son of Samsul Haque of Ghomra village; and Alamgir (23), son of Abdul Karim of Rangtia village.
Police stated that the trio is believed to be involved in the transportation and possible distribution of smuggled alcoholic beverages across the border region, a route frequently used for illicit trafficking due to its proximity and porous terrain. Authorities further noted that such operations are part of an ongoing drive to curb smuggling and illegal trade in the district.
The seized liquor and the vehicle used in the transportation have been taken into police custody as evidence. Legal proceedings have been initiated, and the accused are expected to be produced before the court later the same day.
A senior officer from Nalitabari Police Station confirmed that a case has been filed against the detainees under relevant sections of the law related to smuggling and illegal possession of contraband goods. He further emphasised that intensified monitoring and regular checkpoints would continue in border-adjacent areas to prevent similar incidents.
