Ransom Call Follows Child Tragedy

A deeply distressing incident in the Sakhipur Upazila of Tangail District has shocked local residents, after the body of a missing schoolgirl, Senzuti, was recovered from a pond within the premises of the Upazila Parishad two days after she was reported missing. Police confirmed the recovery on Monday morning at around 8:30 am.

The deceased, Senzuti, a second-grade student at Sakhipur Adarsha Shishu Kanon Pre-Cadet School, was the daughter of Falu Chandra Malu, a resident of Mandirpara area under Ward No. 7 of Sakhipur municipality.

According to family accounts and police statements, the child went missing on Saturday afternoon (20 June) after 4:00 pm. Despite extensive searches by relatives across nearby areas, no trace of her was initially found. The disappearance quickly spread through social media, triggering widespread concern and public appeals for information.

Her father lodged a general diary (GD) with Sakhipur Police Station the same night. The situation took a more alarming turn when, according to family members, they received a phone call on Sunday night demanding a ransom of 300,000 taka in exchange for the girl’s safe return. Roughly half an hour after the alleged call, local residents discovered a child’s body floating in the Upazila Parishad pond on Monday morning and immediately informed the police.

Police later recovered the body and sent it to Tangail General Hospital morgue for autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Authorities have stated that the circumstances surrounding the case remain under active investigation.

Speaking to reporters, the grieving father expressed profound anguish, stating that his daughter had been killed and her body disposed of in the pond. He demanded exemplary punishment for those responsible, urging authorities to ensure justice is served.

Law enforcement officials have not yet confirmed whether the ransom call is directly linked to the death but indicated that all possible angles, including abduction and murder, are being examined. Investigators are currently analysing phone records, witness statements, and CCTV footage from surrounding areas to reconstruct the sequence of events.

The incident has heightened concerns in the local community, particularly regarding child safety and the vulnerability of minors in residential neighbourhoods. Authorities have assured that the investigation will be conducted thoroughly and that legal action will follow once evidence is established.
