Former Bangladesh Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu has been sentenced to a total of 30 years’ imprisonment after being convicted on eight charges by the International Crimes Tribunal-2. As the sentences are to run concurrently, he will serve an effective prison term of 10 years.
The verdict was delivered on Tuesday (30 June) by a three-member bench of International Crimes Tribunal-2, headed by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury. The other members of the bench were Justice Md Monjurul Bashid and Justice Nur Mohammad Shahriar Kabir.
Hasanul Haq Inu was the sole accused in the case.
The ruling marks another significant judgement by Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal, a special court established to hear cases involving crimes falling within its jurisdiction under the country’s legal framework. The tribunal has, over the years, dealt with a number of high-profile cases involving political figures and individuals accused of serious offences.
According to the verdict announced by the tribunal, Inu received separate prison terms on eight charges, amounting to a combined sentence of 30 years. However, because the court directed that the sentences would run concurrently rather than consecutively, he will serve a maximum of 10 years in prison.
The judgement was pronounced in open court in the presence of the three-member judicial bench. No other individual was named as an accused in the case, making Inu the only defendant throughout the proceedings.
The full written judgement, including the tribunal’s detailed legal reasoning, findings on each of the eight charges, and the specific breakdown of the sentences, is expected to be made available separately.
More details regarding the verdict, the individual charges, and the tribunal’s observations are expected to emerge once the complete judgement is released.
