Raphinha has etched his name into the history books of FC Barcelona after being appointed as the club’s primary captain for the 2026-27 season. The 29-year-old forward becomes the very first Brazilian footballer in the Catalan club’s storied history to wear the official captain’s armband as first skipper, marking a monumental milestone in his career at Camp Nou.
The Brazilian international joined Barcelona in 2022 from English Premier League side Leeds United. Over recent seasons under manager Hansi Flick, he has transformed into an indispensable presence on the pitch while asserting himself as a crucial leader inside the dressing room. His tactical maturity, tireless work ethic, and vocal presence have earned him the immense respect of both the coaching staff and his teammates.
Raphinha’s appointment follows a major restructuring of Barcelona’s leadership hierarchy ahead of the new campaign. Marc-André ter Stegen, who served as the first captain last season, completed a loan move to Ajax, while second captain Ronald Araújo departed on loan to Liverpool. These high-profile departures left the primary leadership role vacant, prompting the squad and coaching staff to entrust the responsibility to Raphinha.
Behind Raphinha, Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong assumes the role of second captain. The remaining leadership group is comprised of young Spanish international talents, with Pedri named third captain, Gavi as fourth captain, and Eric García serving as fifth captain.
While legendary Brazilian figures such as Romário, Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, and Neymar have previously graced the iconic Blaugrana shirt, none achieved the status of first captain. Raphinha’s elevation to the role represents a unique achievement in the club’s long relationship with Brazilian talent.
Since arriving in Catalonia, Raphinha has amassed an impressive trophy haul, lifting seven titles with Barcelona. His honours list includes three La Liga championships, one Copa del Rey, and three Spanish Super Cups. His individual displays reached elite heights in 2025, when he was named La Liga Player of the Year and finished among the top goalscorers in the UEFA Champions League.
His attacking productivity has also cemented his position among the most effective Brazilian players ever to represent the club. In 177 appearances for Barcelona across all competitions, Raphinha has scored 75 goals, placing him fourth on the list of all-time highest-scoring Brazilians for the club. He sits behind only Rivaldo with 130 goals, Evaristo de Macedo and Neymar tied on 105 goals each, and Ronaldinho with 94 goals. As Barcelona prepare to launch their new campaign, Raphinha will lead the team onto the pitch carrying both the captain’s armband and a historic legacy.
