Two teachers at a madrasa in Sherpur upazila of Bogura have been accused of physically assaulting two residential students after a mobile phone belonging to one of the teachers reportedly went missing. The incident sparked widespread outrage after a video of the alleged abuse circulated on Facebook on Monday, prompting local residents to stage a protest outside the educational institution. By the time police arrived, the two accused teachers had reportedly fled the premises.
The accused have been identified as Atikul Hasan and Ismail Hossain, both employed as teachers at the madrasa. The two victims are residential students whose families live in Nandigram upazila of Bogura district.
According to several students at the madrasa, teacher Atikul Hasan’s mobile phone was recently reported missing. Suspicion subsequently fell on the two students, although no evidence has been publicly disclosed linking them to the disappearance. The students alleged that, on Sunday night (28 June), the two teachers became angry over the missing device and beat the boys with sticks. The assault allegedly left both children with severe bruising and blood clots on different parts of their bodies.
A relative of one of the victims said the family learned about the incident on Monday afternoon. Upon reaching the madrasa, they found both children lying in pain on their dormitory beds. The boys were later rescued and taken to the Sherpur Upazila Health Complex, where they received medical treatment before being discharged and returned to their families later that day.
The incident quickly drew public attention after a video showing the alleged assault spread widely on Facebook. The footage triggered strong reactions among local residents, who gathered outside the madrasa to demand justice for the children and legal action against those responsible. The protest reflected growing concern over allegations of corporal punishment and the safety of children in educational institutions.
Sub-Inspector Tofazzal Hossain of Sherpur Police Station said officers visited the madrasa after receiving reports of the alleged abuse. Police also spoke with the two injured students during their visit. However, the accused teachers could not be detained immediately because they had already left the institution before law enforcement arrived.
Police said appropriate legal action would be taken following the incident. The allegations have intensified calls for a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the assault and to ensure accountability if the accusations are proven.
