Ronaldo Confirms Current World Cup Will Be His Last

Cristiano Ronaldo has defied the traditional timeline of elite football. While his contemporaries have long since traded their boots for tailored suits to analyse matches from television studios, the Portuguese talisman continues to lead his national side on the pitch well past his fortieth birthday. Currently participating in his sixth World Cup, Ronaldo remains the focal point of Portugal’s attack. However, ahead of a highly anticipated round-of-16 clash against Spain, the iconic forward has dropped the strongest hint yet that his international career is nearing its final chapter.

Addressing the media during a pre-match press conference, the Portuguese captain was asked whether he intended to continue representing his country beyond the current tournament. Known for his fierce independence, Ronaldo initially deflected pressure regarding his exact retirement date. “I will retire when I want to, not when you want me to,” he stated firmly. “At the moment, my sole focus is helping the team win.”

Despite leaving his long-term future slightly ambiguous, Ronaldo left no room for doubt regarding his future on the global stage, confirming that this tournament would be his final World Cup. “I am trying to enjoy this World Cup as much as possible because I know it is my last. I truly hope the upcoming match against Spain is not my final appearance in this competition,” he added.

Speculation regarding his departure from international football intensified recently after his sister publicly suggested that he would step down immediately after the tournament. Ronaldo, however, was quick to temper those expectations, clarifying that he would not let raw emotion dictate such a monumental decision.

The timing of his announcement adds a layer of poignancy, given that the 2030 World Cup is scheduled to be co-hosted by Portugal, alongside Spain and Morocco, marking the centenary of the tournament. Had Ronaldo chosen to push on until 2030, he would be 45 years old, a milestone that would comfortably make him the oldest player ever to feature in World Cup history.

Instead, the veteran striker appears content to call time on his illustrious World Cup journey on his own terms. “Sooner or later, the time comes to hang up the boots,” Ronaldo reflected. “To be completely honest, whatever happens tomorrow, I will leave the pitch knowing I gave absolutely everything. I have given my entire life to football, and I have nothing left to ask of it. I still play because I love the game. Without that passion, it would be impossible to maintain this level. I have already scored three goals in four matches during this tournament. I am not doing too badly, am I?”

Ronaldo’s statistical contribution in the current campaign justifies his self-belief. With three goals in four appearances, he continues to break boundaries. Earlier in the group stage, his goal against Uzbekistan made him the first player in football history to score in six consecutive World Cups. He followed that feat by scoring a crucial goal against Croatia, emphatically silencing critics who had long pointed out his lack of goals in the knockout rounds of major tournaments.

Portugal’s upcoming opponents, Spain, will be acutely aware of the threat he still poses. Ronaldo boasts an impressive historical record against their Iberian rivals. He famously netted a memorable hat-trick against them during the group stages of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, and more recently found the back of the net in the 2025 Nations League final. With the curtain slowly falling on his unparalleled international career, Ronaldo looks prepared to summon his legendary competitive spirit one more time on the world stage.
