A man has been arrested in Bangladesh’s Moulvibazar district after allegedly murdering his wife, burying her body in the garden of their home and attempting to conceal the crime for nearly three weeks by filing a false missing person report with police.
The suspect, 38-year-old Alamgir Hossain, was taken into custody after police recovered the partially decomposed body of his 27-year-old wife, Jaheda Begum, from beneath the courtyard of their residence in Rajnagar Upazila. Investigators say the gruesome discovery was made after the accused reportedly confessed during police questioning.
According to police and local residents, the incident dates back to the night of 20 June, when a heated domestic dispute broke out between the couple. Investigators allege that the argument escalated to the point where Alamgir strangled his wife to death inside their home.
Police said that after the killing, the suspect allegedly dug a pit in the courtyard of his own property and buried the body in an apparent attempt to destroy evidence and prevent the crime from being discovered. Authorities believe he then carried on with his daily routine for almost 20 days, behaving as though nothing had happened in an effort to avoid raising suspicion among neighbours and relatives.
The case took a dramatic turn on Monday when Alamgir himself visited Rajnagar Police Station to file a General Diary, claiming that his wife had suddenly disappeared without informing anyone. He reportedly suggested that she might have secretly travelled abroad.
However, officers became suspicious after noticing inconsistencies in his account and unusual behaviour during the reporting process. As questioning continued, police said the contradictions in his statements became increasingly apparent. Under sustained interrogation, the suspect eventually admitted that he had killed his wife following the family dispute and disclosed where he had buried her body.
Acting on the information provided, police officers went to the residence and excavated a specific section of the courtyard. The operation led to the recovery of Jaheda Begum’s partially decomposed remains from beneath the soil.
News of the discovery quickly spread throughout the area, leaving local residents shocked. Neighbours said they had been aware that Jaheda had not been seen for several days but had never imagined that she had allegedly been murdered and buried within the family home. Many were also astonished that the accused had attempted to divert suspicion by personally reporting her as missing.
Officer-in-Charge Md Farid Uddin Ahmed Bhuiyan of Rajnagar Police Station said the body had been sent to the morgue at Moulvibazar 250-Bed District Hospital for a post-mortem examination. The examination is expected to determine the precise cause of death and provide additional forensic evidence for the investigation.
Police confirmed that Alamgir Hossain has been arrested and that preparations are underway to formally charge him with murder. Investigators are also examining whether anyone else may have assisted in concealing the crime or destroying evidence after the alleged killing.
Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing and that further legal action will be taken based on forensic findings, physical evidence and the overall outcome of the inquiry.
