Young fast bowler Nahid Rana produced an exceptional spell of aggressive pace bowling to dismantle Zimbabwe, etching his name into the history books of Bangladesh cricket. Playing in the opening fixture of the three-match One Day International (ODI) series at the Harare Sports Club, Rana delivered a masterclass in seam bowling. His devastating performance single-handedly broke the back of the Zimbabwean batting lineup, bundling out the hosts for a meagre 141 runs in just 36.4 overs.
Rana’s final match figures were astonishing. The right-arm speedster bowled his full quota of 10 overs, conceding a mere 21 runs whilst capturing 6 wickets. This extraordinary performance now stands as the best-ever individual bowling figure by a Bangladeshi bowler in ODI history. Operating with raw pace and precise line and length, Rana gave the opposition batsmen no room to breathe, effectively sealing control of the match for his country from the opening powerplay.
For more than a decade, the national record for the best ODI bowling figures had been shared by two legendary figures of Bangladeshi pace bowling: former captain Mashrafe Mortaza and veteran speedster Rubel Hossain. Mortaza had set the initial benchmark in 2006 against Kenya in Nairobi, where he claimed 6 wickets for 26 runs in his 10 overs. That feat was replicated in 2013 by Rubel Hossain, who tore through the New Zealand batting order in Dhaka, taking 6 wickets for 26 runs in a shorter, explosive spell of 5.5 overs. Rana’s magnificent spell in Harare has finally eclipsed their long-standing achievements, conceding five fewer runs to claim the top spot on the honours board.
The historic feat highlights Rana’s rapid rise within international cricket. Known within domestic circuits for his ability to consistently clock speeds above 145 kilometres per hour, he utilised the favourable Harare conditions perfectly to extract sharp bounce and subtle movement. By establishing a new national record, the young bowler has not only given Bangladesh a perfect start to the series but also signalled a promising new chapter for the country’s fast-bowling unit.
