At least 10 people were injured after a long-running dispute over land ownership escalated into a violent clash in Mahabbatpur village under Khetlal Upazila of Joypurhat on Friday morning.
The injured were rescued by local residents and taken to Joypurhat General Hospital and Khetlal Upazila Health Complex for treatment. Hospital authorities admitted several of the victims for medical care, while others received emergency treatment.
Those reported injured include Abdul Hakim Sardar, Abdul Gafur, Nazidul Sardar, Jamiul Hossain, Abu Sayed, Nadim Sardar and Nazu Begum from one side of the dispute. Two members of the opposing group, identified as Manjurul and Beljan, were also among the injured. Local sources said a total of at least 10 people sustained injuries during the confrontation.
According to Abdul Hakim Sardar, the conflict centres on a nine-decimal plot of land that he purchased in 2020 from Nurunnahan, the daughter of Abdul Latif of Mahabbatpur village. He claimed that after the purchase, Nurunnahan’s younger sister, Sharmin, disputed the ownership of the property and asserted her own claim over the land.
The disagreement has continued for several years and has already reached the courts, where the ownership dispute remains under judicial consideration. Despite the pending legal proceedings, tensions between the two sides reportedly persisted, creating an atmosphere of uncertainty in the area.
Abdul Hakim alleged that on Friday morning Sharmin and her supporters attempted to take possession of the disputed land. He said he and members of his family resisted the move, triggering a confrontation that quickly turned violent. The clash involved members and supporters from both sides, leaving multiple people injured before local residents intervened to bring the situation under control.
Residents of the village rushed to the scene after the violence broke out and assisted in transporting the injured to nearby healthcare facilities. The incident also drew the attention of local law enforcement officials, who later visited the area to assess the situation.
Land ownership disputes remain one of the most common causes of rural conflict in Bangladesh, particularly where competing ownership claims, inheritance issues or contested property transactions remain unresolved. Such disputes frequently lead to prolonged legal battles and, in some cases, violent confrontations when rival claimants attempt to establish possession before court proceedings are concluded.
Officer-in-Charge Moktadul Hossain of Khetlal Police Station confirmed that the clash stemmed from a land-related dispute. He said police were monitoring the situation and that the injured had been admitted to hospital for treatment.
The police official added that no written complaint or formal case had yet been filed. He stated that if a complaint is submitted, investigators will examine the allegations and take the necessary legal action in accordance with the findings of the investigation.
