Fresh concerns over Covid-19 have emerged in India after two people died from the virus in the YSR Kadapa district of the southern state of Andhra Pradesh, prompting local health authorities to intensify surveillance and containment measures.
According to local health officials, the recent fatalities have coincided with the detection of eight active Covid-19 cases in the district, leading authorities to deploy special medical teams to monitor the situation and prevent any wider spread of infection.
One of the deceased was a 52-year-old man from the Rajampet area of Kadapa district. He initially developed symptoms including fever and a persistent cough before testing positive for Covid-19. As his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to the Christian Medical College (CMC) Hospital in Vellore, where he later died while receiving treatment.
The second victim, a 43-year-old resident of Kadapa, was admitted to a government general hospital after experiencing serious health complications. Medical examinations confirmed that he had contracted Covid-19. Despite receiving intensive treatment in the hospital’s dedicated Covid Intensive Care Unit (ICU), he could not be saved.
Health officials have also confirmed that a 25-year-old medical student from Kadapa Medical College has tested positive for the virus. The student is currently in home isolation and is receiving treatment under medical supervision. Officials said the patient’s condition remains stable.
In response to the new infections, the district health administration has strengthened surveillance across affected localities. Special response teams have been deployed to identify potential contacts, monitor suspected cases and ensure timely testing of individuals displaying symptoms consistent with Covid-19.
As part of the containment effort, nearly 40 samples have been collected from people in the affected areas. Laboratory testing has so far confirmed that 18 of those samples are negative for the virus, while the remaining test results are still pending. Health authorities expect these results to provide a clearer picture of whether there has been any further local transmission.
During a meeting of the district administration, public health officials confirmed that eight active Covid-19 cases are currently being monitored within Kadapa district. Patients are being managed according to established public health protocols, while contact tracing and surveillance activities continue.
To better understand the nature of the current infections, samples from confirmed cases have been sent to a specialised laboratory in Pune for genome sequencing. The analysis is expected to identify the circulating variant and help experts determine whether the cases are linked to an existing strain or represent a different pattern of transmission.
Although the latest cluster remains relatively limited, health authorities are maintaining close vigilance. Officials have urged residents to remain cautious, seek medical advice if they develop symptoms such as fever, cough or breathing difficulties, and cooperate with testing and surveillance measures as investigations into the outbreak continue.
