A gruesome murder, concealed for nearly four months beneath the courtyard of a house, has come to light in the Harintana area of Khulna city. The crime, which took place during the middle of the holy month of Ramadan, was exposed following a severe domestic dispute between the perpetrators. Driven by a bitter marital feud, the 22-year-old wife walked into a local police station and confessed to the murder, detailing how she and her 30-year-old husband killed a man and buried him in their front yard. Based on her specific disclosures, police exhumed the badly decomposed remains on Monday afternoon.
Law enforcement officials immediately detained the couple for questioning and sent the remains to the Khulna Medical College Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination. According to preliminary interrogations, the victim was an easy-bike driver who had driven his three-wheeled vehicle to the suspects’ residence on the day of the incident. Investigators revealed that the couple plotted to murder the driver to steal the vehicle. Following the homicide, the husband dismantled the easy-bike, systematically selling off its components piece by piece to avoid detection.
Md Helal Uddin, the Officer-in-Charge of Harintana Police Station, stated that the number plate of the vehicle was recovered from the crime scene. A subsequent verification check with the Khulna City Corporation revealed that the registered owner, a man named Mostafa, had sold the vehicle approximately four years ago. Consequently, the exact identity of the deceased remains unverified, though authorities suspect he could be an individual named Maruf. Crucially, preliminary forensic examinations noted that the victim was missing one leg.
The investigation has also shed light on the troubled background of the accused. The woman was previously involved in sex work, which is how she met the homeowner a few months prior to their marriage. Following the nuptials, the husband actively facilitated her continued involvement in the trade. On the day of the murder, the victim was lured to the isolated residence under this pretext. The couple initially attempted to sedate him by spiking his food. When the narcotic failed to incapacitate him fully, they strangled him to death before burying his body under the cover of darkness.
A local resident, speaking on the condition of anonymity, described the neighbourhood as particularly sparse and secluded, which explained why the burial went completely unnoticed. He added that the couple kept to themselves, though shouting and violent arguments frequently echoed from the house.
Md Humayun Kabir, the Assistant Commissioner of Police for the Sonadanga Zone of the Khulna Metropolitan Police, confirmed that no missing person reports matching the victim’s description had been filed. Because the body had been buried for months, much of the tissue had decomposed into the soil. Specialists from the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) are now working alongside local police at the cordoned site to gather forensic evidence.
