A 20-year-old woman was found dead on the veranda of her husband’s family home in Dhunat upazila of Bogura, while her three-month-old son lay beside her crying in a deeply distressing scene that has shocked the local community.
The incident came to light on Thursday evening, 16 July, at the residence of Farhad Molla in Shiyali village under Nimgachhi Union. According to police and local residents, the deceased, Nammi Akter Nipa, was discovered on the veranda of the house. Her infant son, Nahid, was found lying next to his mother’s body, crying unattended.
Neighbours reported hearing the baby’s cries and, after discovering what had happened, informed Nipa’s parents. By the time they arrived, Nipa’s husband and other members of his family had reportedly fled the house, leaving the infant beside the body. The child’s maternal family rescued him before notifying police.
Officers from Dhunat Police Station recovered Nipa’s body and sent it to the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital morgue in Bogura on Friday morning, 17 July, for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
Nipa was the daughter of Lal Mia Pramanik from Baroitali village in Nashipur Union of Gabtali upazila. She married Bahadur Molla, the son of Farhad Molla of Shiyali village, around three years ago. According to police and local sources, the couple had experienced ongoing marital disputes, reportedly linked to financial hardship. Their son, Nahid, was born approximately three months ago.
Investigators said that on Wednesday morning, 15 July, Bahadur took his wife and infant son to her parents’ home in Baroitali village before returning to his own residence. He returned to his in-laws’ home around midday on Thursday and later brought Nipa and the baby back to his family home at approximately 5:00 p.m.
Later that evening, at around 8:00 p.m., neighbours contacted Nipa’s family, claiming she had died after allegedly hanging herself from a beam inside the house using a scarf. They also informed the family that Nipa’s husband and his relatives had left the property, abandoning the infant beside her body.
Nipa’s relatives reached the house at around 10:00 p.m. and rescued the child before police arrived to recover the body from the veranda. The incident has prompted widespread concern among local residents, particularly over the circumstances in which the infant was left alone following the woman’s death.
Nipa’s mother, Jelekha Begum, has filed an unnatural death case with Dhunat Police Station. Police said the case is currently being investigated, while the post-mortem findings will play a crucial role in determining the next legal steps.
Investigating officer Aminul Islam said that no visible injury marks were found on Nipa’s body during the initial examination. He confirmed that her husband works as an auto-rickshaw driver and stated that the couple had reportedly been experiencing marital conflict for some time.
Officer-in-Charge Atikul Islam of Dhunat Police Station said that Nipa’s husband and other members of his family have been absconding since the incident. He added that the body has been sent for forensic examination and that any further legal action will depend on the findings of the post-mortem report. The investigation remains ongoing.
