Young Man Stabbed to Death Following Football Match Dispute

A violent altercation stemming from a local football match resulted in the tragic death of a 26-year-old man in Sirajganj’s Raiganj upazila. The incident occurred late on Sunday night, 19 July 2026, in the Kalinja Bazar area under the Pangasi union precinct. The deceased, identified as Mohammad Elias Khan, was the son of Sattar Khan, a resident of Kalinja village.

According to local witnesses and spectators, the trouble began earlier on Sunday afternoon during a community football match in the village. Elias Khan became embroiled in a heated verbal altercation with a local youth named Russel over an incident on the pitch. Although fellow players and onlookers intervened at the time to calm both parties down and defuse the immediate tension, the dispute was far from resolved.

The animosity harboured from the afternoon pitch dispute spilled over into the night with fatal consequences. At around 10:30 pm, Russel and his son, Siam Ahmed, allegedly intercepted Elias Khan in the Kalinja Bazar area. Armed with sharp weapons, the father and son launched a sudden and coordinated assault on the unsuspecting young man. Elias was subjected to multiple stab wounds before the attackers fled the scene, leaving him heavily bleeding on the ground as local shopkeepers rushed to help.

Bystanders immediately rescued the critically injured Elias and transported him to the Raiganj Upazila Health Complex. However, the attending physician pronounced him dead upon arrival. Medical staff noted that extensive blood loss from the deep penetrative wounds before reaching the hospital was the primary cause of death.

Md Jahurul Islam, a member of the local Union Parishad, confirmed that the local administration was immediately notified of the murder. He stated that the news of the killing triggered immense grief and anger among the victim’s neighbours and relatives, necessitating swift intervention to maintain order.

Md Ahsanuzzaman, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Raiganj Police Station, stated that a police contingent promptly visited the crime scene to gather evidence and talk to witnesses. Law enforcement officials have launched a comprehensive investigation to establish the exact sequence of events that led to the homicide. The body of the deceased is being sent to the Sirajganj Shahid M. Monsur Ali Medical College Hospital morgue for a mandatory post-mortem examination.

The primary suspects, Russel and his son Siam, managed to flee the locality immediately after the attack and are currently in hiding. Police teams have initiated targeted raids across nearby areas to track their movements and secure their arrest. Meanwhile, to pre-empt any retaliatory violence or further civil unrest between families in the village, the authorities have deployed additional police personnel to patrol Kalinja Bazar and its surrounding neighbourhoods. While the police await a formal written complaint from the victim’s family to log a murder case, preliminary legal proceedings have already begun.
