IOC Dismisses Neutrality Breach Complaint Against FIFA President Infantino

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has dismissed a formal complaint filed against FIFA President Gianni Infantino regarding alleged breaches of political neutrality. The complaint, brought forward by the human rights organisation FairSquare, targeted Infantino’s vocal and visible political support for United States President Donald Trump. An IOC spokesperson confirmed the dismissal to news agency AFP on Friday.

FairSquare argued that Infantino had repeatedly broken the IOC’s strict rules governing political neutrality. The human rights group pointed to a series of high-profile public appearances and actions where the FIFA chief appeared to align himself closely with Trump’s political agenda.

Following a thorough evaluation, the IOC Ethics Commission concluded that the matter fell outside its regulatory mandate. An IOC spokesperson told AFP that each international sports federation operates as an independent and autonomous body under the Olympic Charter. Consequently, the IOC Ethics Commission lacks jurisdiction over the internal political conduct or governance decisions of individual federation leaders like Infantino.

The decision has raised eyebrows in the sporting world, given Infantino’s dual status. As one of roughly one hundred IOC members, Infantino took an official oath committing to act independently of commercial and political interests. The Olympic Charter explicitly reinforces this obligation, binding all individual members to maintain strict neutrality across their sporting duties.

This is not the first time the IOC has brushed aside concerns surrounding Infantino’s political ties. In February, the governing body dismissed a similar controversy over his attendance at the inaugural meeting of President Trump’s ‘Board of Peace’. During that gathering, Infantino wore a red cap emblazoned with ‘USA’ and the numbers ’45-47’—a clear reference to Trump’s non-consecutive presidential terms.

Defending its stance at the time, an IOC representative informed AFP that the committee remained in close contact with FIFA regarding its diplomatic initiatives. The spokesperson highlighted FIFA’s efforts to support a sports recovery investment programme in Gaza and Palestine, focusing on athletic infrastructure, education, and elite athletic development. The IOC maintained that such developmental projects completely align with the role of an international sports federation, drawing parallels to its own Olympic Solidarity initiative in the region.

Infantino’s alliance with Trump has generated friction on multiple occasions. Last December, FIFA presented Trump with its inaugural Peace Award. Infantino justified the accolade by praising the US President for his “extraordinary and exceptional” contribution to fostering global peace and unity.

Adding to the scrutiny, Trump publicly claimed during the World Cup in North America that he personally telephoned Infantino to intervene before a red-card suspension imposed on American striker Folarin Balogun was lifted. Despite growing calls for accountability over these political entanglements, the IOC’s latest decision effectively shields the FIFA president from institutional sanctions under Olympic ethics rules.
