Woman Killed in Mirpur Wall Collapse

A woman was killed and seven others were injured after a boundary wall of Mirpur University College collapsed in the Mirpur area of Dhaka on Tuesday afternoon while people were waiting to collect subsidised goods distributed by the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB).

The deceased has been identified as Nasima Begum, a resident of Janata Housing in Mirpur-2. According to police, she was among several people standing near the college’s rear boundary when a section of the wall suddenly gave way, trapping those nearby beneath the debris.

The incident occurred behind Mirpur University College during the afternoon. Local residents and bystanders rushed to the scene immediately after hearing the collapse and joined rescue efforts before emergency responders arrived. The injured were later taken to different hospitals in the capital for treatment.

Confirming the incident, Mirpur Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Hafizur Rahman said that Nasima Begum had died in the accident and seven others had sustained injuries. He added that the legal process related to the incident was under way and that police were handling the matter in accordance with the law.

An eyewitness said a large number of people had formed a queue to receive TCB products when the accident happened. According to the witness, the wall collapsed without warning, triggering panic among those waiting nearby. Several people were pinned beneath the fallen structure.

“I ran towards the spot as soon as I saw the wall collapse,” the eyewitness said. “Around seven or eight people were trapped or injured. I saw one woman with severe facial injuries and a broken leg. Later, I learned that her name was Nasima and that she had died.”

The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh regularly distributes essential commodities at subsidised prices to eligible consumers through scheduled sales programmes, often drawing large crowds at designated distribution points. Such queues can become particularly busy when demand for essential food items is high.

The cause of the wall collapse had not been officially confirmed at the time of reporting. Authorities are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident as part of the ongoing legal and administrative process. The condition of the injured has not yet been disclosed by officials.

The tragedy has once again drawn attention to the importance of ensuring the structural safety of walls and other public infrastructure in areas where large numbers of people gather. Officials have not yet announced whether a formal investigation will be conducted into the condition of the collapsed boundary wall.
