Two Political Leaders Arrested Under Anti-Terrorism Act in Shibpur

Police have arrested two local political leaders affiliated with the Awami League and its student wing, the Chhatra League, during overnight raids in Shibpur Upazila, Narsingdi. The arrests were made under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

In the first operation conducted late on Sunday night, 26 July 2026, officers apprehended 45-year-old Shahadat Hossain Shyamal Molla from the Ashrafpur area under Shibpur Municipality. Molla serves as the office secretary of the Shibpur Municipal Awami League unit and is the son of the late Salauddin of Ashrafpur village.

During a simultaneous drive on the same night, a separate police team raided a residence in Madhyapara village under Dulalpur Union. Officers arrested 35-year-old Md Sharif Khan, who holds the position of president of the Dulalpur Union Chhatra League. Khan is the son of Anwar Hossain Khan of Madhyapara.

According to local law enforcement sources, the operation was launched following specific intelligence regarding the suspects’ alleged involvement in activities breaching the Anti-Terrorism Act. Police teams from Shibpur Model Police Station coordinated the nighttime raids across the two distinct locations within the sub-district to ensure both suspects were taken into custody without incident.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shibpur Model Police Station, Mohammad Kohinoor Miah, confirmed the arrests to reporters. He stated that both individuals were detained in connection with cases filed under anti-terrorism legislation and were formally presented before the court on Monday, 27 July, following initial processing and paperwork.

Local authorities noted that law enforcement drives remain ongoing across the region to maintain public order, prevent civil unrest, and apprehend individuals named in connection with political violence or anti-state activities.
