Tensions Flare in Narayanganj as Rival BNP and Jamaat Rallies Face Off

A volatile standoff erupted between activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in Narayanganj’s Araihazar on Saturday afternoon, following simultaneous counter-marches by the two political outfits. The confrontation left both factions standing face-to-face for nearly an hour and a half, with a major violent clash only averted due to a swift and tactical intervention by local police forces.

The incident unfolded around 5:00 pm in the busy commercial precinct of Araihazar Bazaar. Eyewitnesses reported that Jamaat-e-Islami launched a scheduled procession through the market square, only to be met almost immediately by a secondary demonstration organised by BNP activists. As the two rival rallies converged, aggressive chanting and heightened rhetoric brought the atmosphere to a boiling point. Alerted to the imminent risk of violence, police units deployed rapidly, forming a physical barrier between the opposing crowds to maintain order.

Key regional leaders were present on both sides during the confrontation. The BNP contingent was headed by Lutfar Rahman Abdu, a senior member of the district convening committee, Alongside Araihazar Upazila BNP President Yusuf Ali Bhuiyan and General Secretary Jewel Ahmed. Meanwhile, the Jamaat-e-Islami demonstration was led by District Ameer Mominur Haq Sarkar, Social Welfare Secretary Professor Ilias Molla, and Araihazar North Unit Ameer Maulana Monirul Islam.

Following the event, leadership from both camps traded accusations regarding the origins of the friction. Professor Ilias Molla claimed that Jamaat’s programme had been announced well in advance, alleging that the BNP mob had assembled specifically to disrupt their gathering. He emphasised that Jamaat activists exercised restraint to avoid bloodshed. Conversely, BNP General Secretary Jewel Ahmed rejected those allegations entirely, asserting that his party was merely carrying out its own pre-arranged itinerary without succumbing to external provocation.

In response to the mounting risk of chaos, the local administration dispatched substantial police reinforcements to secure Araihazar Bazaar. Officers maintained a firm perimeter between the two groups until both factions eventually dispersed peacefully.

Confirming the resolution of the incident, Araihazar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Sabzel Hossain stated that law enforcement officers positioned themselves strategically to prevent any escalation. He confirmed that no casualties or property damage occurred, adding that both political groups completed their respective activities before exiting the area without further disruption.
