A local politician associated with the youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was detained unclad and allegedly assaulted by residents after entering a woman’s residence in Satkhira district. The incident occurred around 10:30 pm on Thursday in Harinagar village, located within Shyamnagar Upazila. Video footage capturing the confrontation quickly circulated across social media platforms, triggering widespread community debate.
The individual involved has been identified as Abdul Mannan, son of Abdur Rahim from Chondipur village. Mannan serves as the president of the Ward No. 6 unit of the Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal in Shyamnagar municipality.
According to local accounts, a crowd gathered to encircle the dwelling in Harinagar village following suspicions regarding Mannan’s presence. Residents subsequently broke down the door, dragged Mannan outside without clothing, and tied him to a wooden pillar in the veranda, where he was reportedly subjected to physical assault. Upon receiving news of the disturbance, senior leaders from the Upazila Juba Dal unit arrived at the scene to intervene and transport him away from the hostile crowd.
Local political figures, including Munshiganj Union BNP leaders Abul Kashem and Abu Hamza, confirmed that Mannan and the woman were acquainted through work-related dealings. According to statements relayed by community members, the woman alleged that Mannan had been attempting to blackmail her, frequently visiting her home to press improper demands. On Thursday night, he gained entry under the pretext of offering her transportation to the local market, prompting neighbours to intercept him inside the residence.
Party records indicate that Mannan has faced disciplinary scrutiny in the past. On 7 July 2025, municipal Juba Dal leaders took formal organizational action against him following accusations that he had entered a private commercial establishment to demand extortion money. Addressing the latest scandal, Fariduzzaman Babu, acting convener of Shyamnagar municipal Juba Dal, stated that party officials had taken note of the viral videos and that further disciplinary measures would be enforced against Mannan for misconduct.
Shyamnagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Shafiul Alam Patwary confirmed that while law enforcement is aware of the circulating footage, no formal complaints have been lodged by either party. By the time police personnel dispatched to the scene arrived, elders from both families had resolved the dispute privately and dispersed the gathering. Mannan’s mobile phone remained switched off, preventing journalists from securing his direct response.
