Police officers in Gangni Upazila of Meherpur district have cordoned off a plot of farmland after local residents unearthed ten metallic objects resembling landmines alongside five storage boxes. The discovery occurred on Saturday afternoon in Betbaria village, situated within Kazipur Union near the border region.
The incident unfolded whilst Kando Malitha, son of the late Abul Malitha, was tilling his family plot. His farm implements struck a series of hard metallic obstacles buried beneath the topsoil. Curiosity prompted further excavation, revealing ten round landmine-like devices and five empty storage containers designed to house explosives.
News of the discovery spread rapidly across Betbaria and neighbouring villages, drawing crowds of curious onlookers to the farm. Recognising the potential hazard posed by the unknown items, local residents alerted the Gangni Police Station to secure the scene. A patrol unit from the nearby Bamundi Police Camp responded promptly, establishing a cordon around the perimeter to keep residents at a safe distance.
Sub-Inspector Jahurul Islam, in charge of the Bamundi Police Camp, noted that officers cannot immediately determine whether the devices are live ordnance, obsolete military equipment, or inert metallic objects. He emphasised that public safety remains the immediate priority, urging villagers to strictly observe police barricades while specialist assessments are pending.
Gangni Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Shimul Kumar Das confirmed that law enforcement has formally requested the intervention of a specialized bomb disposal unit. Technical experts are expected to inspect the site, conduct diagnostic tests, and safely neutralize or recover the devices. Until the expert team arrives to verify the precise nature and risk level of the objects, police personnel will maintain round-the-clock security over the area.
