Around 450 irregular and undocumented Bangladeshi migrants stranded in Libya are set to return home on three chartered flights this month, arranged by the Bangladesh Embassy in Tripoli and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).
According to a Facebook post by the embassy yesterday, the first repatriation flight will depart from Tripoli on March 12, followed by flights from Benghazi on March 19 and Misrata on March 26. These flights were initially scheduled for earlier dates but were delayed due to immigration clearance issues.
The Bangladesh mission said most of the returning migrants had attempted to reach Italy via the Mediterranean Sea but were unsuccessful, leading to their detention in Libyan facilities. Others had initially entered Libya through legal means but later became undocumented due to various circumstances.
The repatriation effort is part of an ongoing initiative to assist stranded Bangladeshi nationals and ensure their safe return home.
