India has yet to respond to a request from Bangladesh seeking a bilateral meeting between Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the upcoming BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok next month.
“There has been no response,” Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain told reporters yesterday when asked about the status of the request.
Bangladesh submitted the proposal through diplomatic channels last week, aiming to arrange the high-level meeting during the 6th BIMSTEC Summit, which will be held in Bangkok from April 2 to 4.
On March 21, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that they had “no update to share” regarding any scheduled bilateral talks between the two leaders.
Prof Yunus is expected to travel to Thailand for the two-day summit, where Bangladesh will assume the chairmanship of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC), a regional grouping of seven nations: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.
