India Reopens 32 Airports Following Ceasefire with Pakistan

New Delhi, 12 May 2025 – In a significant move towards normalcy, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) announced the immediate reopening of 32 airports that were temporarily closed amid escalating tensions with Pakistan. The closures, initiated on 7 May during Operation Sindoor, were initially set to last until 15 May but have been lifted following a ceasefire agreement between the two nations.

The affected airports, primarily located in northern and western regions of India, had suspended civil operations due to security concerns. With the de-escalation of hostilities, these airports are now fully operational for civil aviation activities.

The AAI has advised passengers to check flight statuses directly with airlines and monitor official channels for updates. Major carriers, including IndiGo and SpiceJet, have announced plans to resume services to these airports promptly.

Background:

The temporary closure of these airports was a precautionary measure during Operation Sindoor, launched by India in response to a deadly terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam region. The operation targeted terrorist infrastructure across the border, leading to heightened military activity and the subsequent suspension of civil aviation in the affected areas.

The ceasefire agreement, brokered with international assistance, has led to a de-escalation of tensions, allowing for the safe resumption of civil aviation operations. Both nations have expressed a commitment to maintaining peace and avoiding further conflict.

Impact on Air Travel:

During the closure period, approximately 1,500 flights were canceled, affecting thousands of passengers. The reopening of these airports is expected to alleviate travel disruptions and restore normalcy to air travel in the region.

Passengers are encouraged to stay informed through official airline communications and the AAI’s announcements to ensure smooth travel plans.
