Former Bangladesh international fast bowler Shafiul Islam is mourning the loss of his mother, who passed away on Wednesday morning. The 36-year-old cricketer personally shared the sad news through a heartfelt social media post.
Writing on his official Facebook page, the right-arm pace bowler expressed his deep grief over his mother’s departure at 8:30 am. He requested prayers for the departed soul, asking Almighty Allah to grant her Jannatul Firdaus and forgive any shortcomings, whilst also urging friends, well-wishers, and supporters to keep his family in their thoughts during this difficult period.
Shafiul emerged as a vital component of Bangladesh’s bowling attack following his international debut in 2010 against Sri Lanka in a One Day International. During that same landmark year, he went on to earn his Test and Twenty20 International caps, establishing himself as a reliable option with the new ball due to his ability to seam and swing the ball effectively. His international career saw him represent the Tigers in 11 Test matches, 60 ODIs, and 20 T20Is, taking a cumulative total of 107 international wickets across all three formats.
Despite battling recurring injury setbacks that periodically disrupted his tenure with the national side, Shafiul produced several memorable spells on the international stage, including crucial performances during the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup hosted in the subcontinent. His final appearance in international cricket came in March 2020 against Zimbabwe in Sylhet. Following an extended absence from the national setup, the veteran bowler formally announced his retirement from all forms of professional cricket on 5 January this year. Members of the cricketing fraternity and fans across Bangladesh have offered their condolences to Shafiul and his grieving family.
