A 22-year-old man died after being electrocuted just hours after his newlywed wife was brought to his family home in Daulatpur, Kushtia, turning a night of wedding celebrations into one of profound grief.
Ahmed Anas Bappi, son of Yusuf Ali of Gachher Diar Schoolpara in Hoglabaria Union, was electrocuted at around 2am on Friday while reportedly attempting to move a standing fan at his home. His death came only hours after the formal wedding celebrations and just before a bou-bhat reception planned for the following day.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, 21 August, in the Gachher Diar Schoolpara area of Hoglabaria Union in Daulatpur upazila. Family members said Anas was seriously injured after coming into contact with electricity while moving the fan.
Relatives immediately rescued him and rushed him to Kushtia Sadar Hospital. Despite their efforts, the attending doctor examined him and declared him dead.
Anas’s marriage to 18-year-old Saira Khatun had been solemnised around two months earlier. On Thursday afternoon, Saira was formally brought to Anas’s home, where preparations were under way to welcome the newlywed couple and host relatives and guests.
Saira is the daughter of Saiful Islam of Bahermadi Alinagar in Philipnagar Union of the same upazila.
The family had planned a bou-bhat ceremony for Friday afternoon. Preparations continued late into the night, with food being arranged for guests and a temporary canopy being set up at the house. Anas was reportedly involved in overseeing the preparations before the accident occurred.
The tragedy unfolded suddenly at around 2am. According to family members, Anas attempted to move a standing fan when he inadvertently suffered an electric shock. The incident left him critically injured, prompting his family to take immediate action and transport him to hospital.
His death came as a devastating shock to everyone present at the house. Only a few hours earlier, the residence had been filled with the sounds of wedding celebrations, conversations among relatives and preparations for the next day’s reception. By the early morning, the atmosphere had changed completely, with relatives grieving and the household filled with cries of mourning.
For Saira, the tragedy was particularly devastating. Having entered her husband’s home only hours earlier, she was suddenly left to mourn his death instead of beginning her married life with the celebrations planned by both families.
Local Union Parishad member Milon Hossain said Anas had died after being electrocuted by the standing fan. He said the couple’s marriage had taken place around two months earlier and that Saira had been brought to Anas’s home on Thursday ahead of the scheduled bou-bhat ceremony.
The incident also highlights the sudden dangers that can arise from household electrical appliances, particularly when electrical equipment is moved while connected to a power source. A damaged cable, faulty connection or contact with an exposed electrical component can result in a fatal accident within seconds.
Daulatpur Police Station officer-in-charge Khaledur Rahman confirmed the incident. He said police were sent to the scene after receiving the report and that officers were monitoring the situation.
The planned celebration has now given way to mourning. A household that had been preparing to welcome guests and celebrate a new chapter in the young couple’s life was instead left confronting an unimaginable loss.
