Baby Naznin Forgoes Birthday Celebrations to Pray for Ailing Brother

Renowned playback singer Baby Naznin, affectionately dubbed Bangladesh’s “Black Diamond,” marked her birthday under sombre circumstances, choosing to forgo all festivities as her younger brother, veteran journalist Enam Sarkar, battles cancer in hospital.
Enam Sarkar, a prominent media figure who previously served as News Editor at SA TV and currently leads the Cultural Journalists’ Forum of Bangladesh (CJFB), has been undergoing treatment at the Bangladesh Medical University Hospital in Dhaka for several months. His journalism career spans nearly three decades, including senior editorial roles at notable publications such as Weekly Purnima, Janakantha, and The Daily Inqilab. His prolonged illness has left the family in a state of profound anxiety.
Reflecting on the occasion, the National Film Award-winning artist stated that she rarely hosts elaborate birthday celebrations, but her brother’s grave medical condition has made festivities unthinkable. Instead of receiving birthday wishes for herself, the vocalist appealed to fans, colleagues, and the public to keep her brother in their prayers for a full recovery.
The personal trial follows years of professional and political adversity for the singer. Baby Naznin lived in self-imposed exile abroad for 15 years due to political friction arising from her role as an advisor to Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Khaleda Zia under the previous administration. The political pressure disrupted her musical career, restricting her ability to record new tracks or perform in Bangladesh. Following political shifts in 2024, she returned home to resume her civic engagements, advocate for cultural sector reforms, and prepare fresh musical releases for her audience. She currently continues her service as an advisor to the BNP Chairman.
Spanning over four decades, Baby Naznin’s illustrious career features iconic hits such as “Elomelo Batase Uriyachi Sharir Anchol”, “Kal Sara Rat Chilo Swaponer-o Rat”, “Duchokhe Ghum Ase Na”, and “Morar Kokile”. Despite returning to the national stage, her focus remains squarely on her family as she waits alongside her relatives for her brother’s recovery.
